It was 1400 hrs on a sunny September afternoon in the North West of England and the main phone rang in Pilgrim’s Oldham office. On the line was a Uniper, operated Power Plant, an existing Pilgrim customer requesting urgent service support. Pilgrim’s Service team arrived on site the next morning and got to work helping the customer to resolve their bolting issue. A combination of not being able to turn the shaft and confined working conditions complicated the bolt removal process. Pilgrim assessed the situation and introduced a successful removal procedure which allowed the coupling to be decoupled within a couple of hours. A Uniper, spokesperson commented;

“As a single shaft Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Station, all shaftline couplings were upgraded over a period of 5 years to Pilgrim bolting solutions. These Bolts have performed consistently since their installation and return each coupling to a concentric condition with minimal effort. During a recent inspection,  emergent works necessitated the split of two couplings for further investigation. Unfortunately, it was not possible to turn the shaft and access to the one of the couplings is restricted due to the design of the pedestal. Our site team made contact with Pilgrim International Ltd. and a small team was rapidly mobilised to assist with the removal of the coupling bolts. The technical support provided was excellent and over the course of a day bolts were removed and the investigation allowed to progress. Whilst onsite the Pilgrim team took dimensions to enable the design of additional tooling to be utilised in the event of a future issue. Excellent service and technical support has been provided from first installation”
